The first week in Thames Ditton

Updated: Jun 3, 2020

1 February - 9 February

At 7:15AM Mirjam and I started our 8 hour journey from Fluitenberg, The Netherlands towards Thames Ditton, England to start our 6 month UK adventure, also known as the 'Stay Abroad' minor. Our journey would consist of driving to Calais, France, getting the ferry to Dover, England and then driving again towards our destination: Thames Ditton in London. We got to our respective families around 17:00PM, first we met Mirjam's host family, then I drove on to meet mine. After meeting everyone and having finished my tea, it was time for bed. The next day we were to celebrate Mirjam's 20th birthday in one of the local restaurants. Before going to the restaurant, me and Mirjam set out to explore Thames Ditton. At 17:00 we all met at the restaurant to have dinner and to get to know each other.

The following day was our first day at the Thames Ditton Junior School, unfortunately it was very chaotic, nobody really seemed to be expecting us so we were placed in a special needs classroom. After the first two hours we met with the year 5 headteacher and came up with a place for us to help out, I was placed in year 4 with Mr. Pearce. The rest of the week went rather smoothly, from 8:45 till 13:00 we helped out at the school during classes and lunch, after school we set out to see more of Thames Ditton itself.

On Wednesday, Marlin, the youngest of my host family, turned 7 so we had a nice birthday party at a lazer tag place with a bunch of his friends. Cathy, my host mum, made a cake which looked exactly like the pet bearded dragon the family has, named Fuego.

This week was a week of getting to know the school, the area and our families. All in all I would say it was a successful week!
